My passion for coaching began in 8th grade when I coached my little brothers’ 2nd grade basketball team for Novato Park and Rec. From there I was hooked, it was the beginning of my journey teaching and coaching athletes.
As a Social Studies teacher at Novato High School, I was able to pursue one of my greatest passions, coaching football. For the past 14 years as Varsity Head Coach at NHS, I was able to have a profound impact on many young men’s lives and been able to, with the help of many, turn the NHS football program into one of the top programs in Northern California. Novato Football has won five league titles, four section titles and represented Northern California in the State Championship in 2007. I was also recognized as the “California State Coach of the Year” and “MCAL Coach of the Decade” during my time there.
I found CrossFit in 2009 believing that I was totally fit. CrossFit has changed my perception of fitness, changed the way I live my life, introduced me to lots of amazing people and has allowed me to truly become a better human being. When my journey into becoming a CrossFit instructor began I did not realize how much my two worlds of educator and coach would collide so perfectly.
As a lifelong educator my goal was simple: make sure that my students walked away each day with a greater understanding of the subject at hand and hopefully use what I taught as a tool for growth and change.
As a lifelong football coach my goal was simple: create a team of power athletes who are strong in mind, heart and body; focusing on hard work, dedication and discipline. There is nothing I would rather be doing than seeing my students pick each other up and support each other 100%. Football is a game of seconds and inches. Watching 11 guys collectively do all that they can to get that extra yard for that game winning score is impressive, but even more impressive is watching a gym full of sweaty tired people peel themselves off the floor to cheer on a teammate who continues to fight and battle the last rep, and when that last rep is done hearing that collective roar, wow.
Fitness, wellness and nutrition are the keys to leading a happy, healthy and productive life. I want my friends, family and our community to walk away each day with a better understanding of the task at hand, I want them to know that the 1-hour a day we spend together is improving their lives. CrossFit is a catalyst for growth and change; lifelong fitness and improved health, well-being and I am lucky enough to be the teacher. I am honored to be your coach, your teacher, and friend. I am thankful everyday for all of you, finding CrossFit and to have my journey lead me to CrossFit North Marin.
Beyond being a teacher, coach and trainer, I am a devoted husband and father of two sweet little girls. I hope that by creating CrossFit North Marin I will be able to continue to inspire people to use fitness and nutrition to enhance their overall health and well being.
Favorite CrossFit WOD: A WOD like Fight Gone Bad has to be my favorite. You have a minute of max effort with each movement and then move onto the next. I like the structure and diversity.
Goat: Muscle-ups! The MU movement is extremely hard to execute. It is hard to get in the reps enough to perfect this movement.
Daily CrossFit Go to site: There isn’t a day that goes by without visiting these sites. NorCal Labs, Gymnastics WOD, CrossFit Endurance, and CrossFit Football are my favs. In a sport that is constantly varied it is important to analyze different structures of programming and implement some that into your daily work.
Favorite cheat food: No question…mint chip ice cream with hard shell.
Favorite CrossFit Athlete: Hands down, Molly Vollmer. Molly has proven to me more than any athlete in CrossFit how far you can go with hard work and dedication. Beyond being a great athlete she is a great coach and mentor to the athletes that she works with on a daily bases. Athletes at CFNM still refer back to the technique and skills they learned from Molly over a year ago.
